105th Foundation Anniversary of Sugpon, Ilocos Sur: A Grand Celebration of Culture and Heritage

February 4, 2025 – Sugpon, Ilocos Sur – The Municipality of Sugpon joyously marked its 105th Foundation Anniversary with a vibrant celebration filled with cultural performances, traditional games, and competitions that showcased the rich heritage of the Sugponians. The event saw participation from elementary and high school students, local government unit (LGU) personnel, and various community members.

The celebration commenced with a grand parade at 7:30 AM, where students, government employees, and community members marched proudly through the town. The parade was followed by an assembly at the Municipal Plaza for the formal opening program.

The event officially began with a solemn prayer led by Hon. Aurelio L. Dayag, Sr., Federated Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR) of Sugpon, Ilocos Sur. The singing of the National Anthem, Ilocos Sur Hymn, and the Sugpon Hymn was presented via an audiovisual presentation (AVP) prepared by the Program Committee.

The Chairman of the 105th Foundation Anniversary Executive Committee, Mr. Raymond M. Latong, delivered the welcome remarks, setting the tone for the day’s events. The crowd was then entertained by a lively performance from the Sugpon Youth Organization.

Municipal Vice Mayor Hon. Rene Crisanto L. Lubrin delivered an inspiring message, highlighting the importance of unity and cultural preservation among Sugponians. The event also featured Salip iti Nainsigudan a Kanta (Traditional Song Contest), with contestants from different barangays showcasing their musical talents.

One of the highlights of the morning program was the State of the Municipality Address delivered by Hon. Daniel C. Laño, Jr., Municipal Mayor. He provided updates on the town’s development projects, achievements, and future plans, reinforcing the commitment to progress and cultural preservation.

Meanwhile, at the Post Harvest Facility, the Salip iti Panaglutoan ti Nainsigudan a Kankanen ken Pinikpikan (Traditional Cooking Competition) and the Salip iti Panagaramidan ti Tapey (Tapey-making Contest) took place. Participants skillfully prepared local delicacies, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Sugpon.

At 1:00 PM, the Municipal Plaza became lively arenas for the Salip iti Nainsigudan nga Ay-Ayam (Traditional Games Competition). For the Adult Category, participants engaged in games such as Tug of War, Lipay, Pakpakaok, Kadangkadang, Kulili, Bawet/Sunay, and Pot Relay, bringing laughter and camaraderie to the competitors. For the Children’s Category, young participants competed in Pakpakaok, Buwabo, Kadangkadang, Lipay, Bawet/Sunay, and Tug of War, showcasing their enthusiasm and agility.

As night fell, the Salip iti Talugading Dagiti Umili (Folk Dance Competition) took center stage, celebrating the beauty and grace of traditional dances. The event was officially opened by Noli B. Pang-Es, Chairman of the Folk Dance Competition, and entertained by a performance from Senior CitizensThe Sugpon Singing Idol Competition was another crowd favorite, featuring exceptional vocal talents from the community.

The much-awaited Pammadayaw 2025 honored individuals and groups who excelled in various competitions. Entertainment performances from Agatha Camila C. Alsong, Mary Taryn Kaye Fontawa, and Dawn Jain Rafael S. Baguioen, further elevated the festive spirit.

Certificates of appreciation and tokens were awarded to the Board of Judges, and winners from all competitions were recognized for their outstanding performances. The program concluded with a heartfelt Words of Thanks from Mrs. Maricel C. Fontawa, Vice Chairman of the 105th Foundation Anniversary Executive Committee, expressing gratitude to all participants, organizers, and attendees who made the event a resounding success.

The 105th Foundation Anniversary of Sugpon, Ilocos Sur, was a testament to the town’s deep-rooted culture, resilience, and unity. As the celebrations ended, the Sugponians carried with them a renewed sense of pride and commitment to preserving their traditions for generations to come.
